Figaro's now able for Australia!

Postby morryvan » Sat Feb 21, 2009 2:04 am

Well after virtually giving up that I would be able to get a Figaro this side of 2021(Australia has a 30 year rule unlike UK 10). An agent based in Brisbane a mere 1800 klm away has gained approval to import & compliance Fig's. So far they have only done a couple. I'm presently talking with them on costs but its looking like it will cost around $15 K for a good one.

I can't believe that may be within a few months I will be an owner, its only been around 8 years since I first started saving.

Hey Tony, that's fantastic news. Sounds like the prices, under the cirumstances aren't a million miles away from the price of a good one here.

Keep us posted, eh?

Tony,

Here in Canada we have a 15 year rule.

The price you're facing isn't that out of line with Canada either. Figs are listed here between 11-14k depending on the mileage and shape of the car.

Keep the faith and best of luck.

That's brilliant news Tony, we know how long you've been waiting :D

Do you have a preference in colour?

That's great but they will be far and few between. Look after it carefully and lock it up real good.
Woke Up this morning to Annie. A 1991 Lapis Grey Figaro, which my husband bought me for our 'Annie'-versary. Total shock!

when i was living in japan last time about 10 years ago i brought a car back to australia. the then regulation stated that i had to own and drive the car in a foreign country for a year, that was a pajero 1991 paris dakar short wheel base. i also brought another car back at the same time. it was a 1986 bentley turbo r,which i restored and sold. because the bently was older than 10 year i could bring it to australia without any restriction.

i remmeber reading somewhere a few years ago the non-restriction import year was raised to 15 years. If that info ist still true you can just buy a figaro from japan, send it to australia, go to the DMT and get it complianced as the figaro is 18 years old. (getting alicence for limited number compliances usually refers to newer cars of special interest, ie, new gtr)

you would also need to pay the necessary taxes and have an engineer check the car....

Dave,

The 15 year law your talking about was changed to effectively be a 30 year rule for any car manufactured after 31/12/89.

You can still personally import any car you have owned ,registered & driven (they actually want to see service records for the car )for 12 months, not sure but I think you can only do this on a 1 car per annum basis.

The car must have been registered ! by this I mean you can't just buy a car restore it for 12 months while your o/s & then bring it back.

The exception to this is to import a vehicle under the "sevs" scheme but the vehicle must be approved to be imported under the scheme & you can only take it to an approved workshop (presently the only place in Aus for a figaro is in Qld) a workshop must be approved on the specific vehicle eg. if your approved to work on a Ferrari you can't just import a figaro even if another workshop has the approval for them.

Finally if the car was ever approved for sale in Australia when new, it won't be approved under the "sevs" scheme so you must wait the 30 years.

hope this clears things up a bit, if you have any questions pm me

Tony

ps.Also don't bring any car back without prior approval for DOTARS , as any vehicle landing in Australia without approval is either sent back or crushed. either option at owners expense.
